Covers of Mainstream Music: Love or hate?

Cover songs. In all honesty I like it when rockers cover mainstream music. Chances are I listen to the cover more than the original. The alternative/punk rock music scene has seen (no pun intended) covers increase in popularity over the years through viral videos and the famed Punk Goes Pop Albums, now on Volume 6. Punk Goes Pop are my favorite because not only do they feature amazing artists of all backgrounds such as Sleeping With Sirens, Forever the Sickest Kids, Tonight Alive, The Ready Set, and Miss May I, but you can also stream the albums on Spotify for free! For anyone who’s close minded out there and hates mainstream, trust me this hasn’t ruined music. Our favorite bands simply made other music better! So here is my question, do you love covers or do you hate them? Does it take something away from the original or does it add to it? Does it simply provide another persons take on the song meant to live side by side or is it a replacement? It’s just something to think about. Not everyone hops on board with a growling man covering Call Me Maybe but for others it’s a funny workout song. Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of Our Last Night’s covers which are really great and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for interesting covers because YES they covered Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkc6QgjbYyI ) and I will be honest, I love it. They do it better than Miley any day. Check out their Youtube channel/Spotify and you’ll see all of the covers they’ve done. If you’re looking for heavier music, start searching because I guarantee you will find some incredibly odd yet amazing metalcore, hardcore, and many other bands covering popular songs. So take a song you hate and see if a band you love saved it and made a cover!

Rest in Peace Mitch Lucker

Rest in Peace Mitch Lucker

One year ago on November 1st Mitch Lucker, lead vocalist of Suicide Silence was killed in a motorcycle accident. Fans remembered him through the epic “stomp”. The band invited anyone who would like, to visit the gravesite. Famous quotes by Mitch have been circulating over the past day or so. I leave you with this one, one that brings tears to my eyes even now after reading it so many times. RIP Mitch.

An intro…

Hello. That’s probably the best way to begin. My name is Emily (thats an oldish picture, sorry), I’m a college student with a love for music specifically post hardcore, hardcore, metalcore, metal, rock, and alternative genres but in all honesty I’ll listen to anything. My college major lies somewhere between the social sciences, the arts, and media studies. My career goal is to work in the music industry, managing a band, marketing an album, getting some hungover band members off of a tour bus and on stage in time for their show, or social media for bands. I love helping bands get promoted! No matter how big or small an band or artist is, they can ALWAYS use more fans, more bookings, more hellos. If posting on Facebook and tweeting a couple times a day helps a band online then I’m all for it, if word of mouth gets them some fans then DO IT! But thats my rant. Any who…some of my favorite bands are Slipknot, Bring Me The Horizon, Suicide Silence, Asking Alexandria, Mushroom Head, Avenged Sevenfold, Flyleaf, Rise Against, Saosin, 30 Seconds to Mars, Angels and Airwaves, I See Stars, Paramore, Breathe Carolina, Sleeping With Sirens, Pierce the Veil, Black Veil Brides, Chiodos, Broadway, We Are The In Crowd, Silverstein, Lights, Mayday Parade, Crown the Empire, Miss May I, Memphis May Fire, and oh so many more. I was born and raised on rock, my dad loves metal and he’s one of my favorite concert buddies, my sisters as well. I go to concerts, meet bands when I can, grab an autograph if I get the chance, I try to support my favorite artists by buying all of their albums but lets face it, I’m in college and I’m poor so I can’t go on a shopping spree for cds every weekend. I am making this blog so that I can share my love for music with anyone who cares to stop and check it out. So here’s to what will hopefully be something awesome. Once again, hello!Image
